During a Live chat session, a customer asked the different between Rugby and Aussie Rule. This question prompted this write in other to aide our prestigious customer.
Although, Rugby and Aussie Rule share some similarities, however, they are different sports. They both have similarly shaped balls and players are not restrained from carrying the ball with the hands.
>The Size of the Field
Aussie rule fields are slightly bigger than the rugby fields. The dimension of a rugby field is fixed, unlike the aussie rule , which varies.
>The Shape of the Field
The shape of the playing field is the most noticeable difference between both sports. The standard rugby is played on a rectangular-shaped pitch while the Aussie rules football is played on an oval-shaped field.
>The Shape of the Ball
It’s somewhat difficult to differentiate a rugby ball from the aussie rule ball because they are both oval-shaped. However, the Aussies ball has a larger bulge at the edge when compared with the rugby ball. The shape of the aussie rule ball makes it somewhat easy to catch, grab, and run with.
>Scoring
In rugby, points are awarded by carrying the ball into the end zone in either of 3 main ways; a try, a conversion, or a drop goal (a successful penalty kick). A try is worth 5 points and is scored by landing the ball between the dead ball line and the goal line. A conversion kick, which is worth 2 points, is scored by kicking the ball between the goalposts while a successful penalty kick drop awards 3 points.
In aussie rule , there are 4 goal posts. Kicking the ball is the only method of scoring; that is, points are not awarded for carrying the ball into the end area. The main goal is worth 6 points while a behind goal is worth 1 point.
